The Hanover Police Service has brought back an initiative to address aggressive driving and loud mufflers this summer.
Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll announced that in response to community concerns and complaints, Project Noisemaker has returned for the summer, running from now until September 7. Officers will be increasing enforcement efforts throughout that period to address ongoing concerns with loud vehicles.
"Essentially, if your motor vehicle is causing others to turn their heads because of the noise levels or windows to rattle as you approach and pass, expect to get stopped by police," said Chief Knoll in a release. "Ensuring safety on our roads is a fundamental responsibility of the Hanover Police Service and all police services across Ontario."
Drivers found in violation are subject to charges under the Highway Traffic Act for offences such as improper muffler and unnecessary noise. These infractions carry set fines of $110 that could also lead to a court date for repeat and ongoing violators.
Last year, during the first three months of the initiative, officers laid 35 charges and issued 22 warnings for offences. The total numbers across the campaign have not been shared by police.
Knoll said although Project Noisemaker concludes in September, enforcement of these laws will continue year-round.
