Owen Sound community centre gets turf upgrade

The Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound has a new turf floor.

The city installed the high-quality artificial turf in partnership with Owen Sound Northstars Lacrosse. It measures the full length and width of the arena floor and was previously used at the National Lacrosse League's Albany FireWolves' practice facility. According to the city, the new turf enhances the arena floor’s functionality, supports athlete safety, and opens the door for new sporting and economic opportunities for the community. Additionally, it is expected to cut ongoing maintenance time by 6 to 8 hours a week compared to the existing concrete floor.

The turf will primarily be used for box lacrosse, with minor, junior, and senior lacrosse teams playing out of the centre. However, the turf space can also be rented for compatible community uses, such as indoor soccer.

The new turf floor cost $50,000, with the city covering half. Owen Sound Lacrosse chipped in the other $25,000 needed. The project was approved through Owen Sound's 2025 capital budget.

"This project shows what’s possible with dedicated community partners. The lacrosse turf will enhance our recreational facilities and help strengthen Owen Sound as a destination for sports and recreation,” Mayor Ian Boddy said in a statement.

The city anticipates the turf floor will last 15 to 20 years with the potential to last longer if only used seasonally.
