Wellington North honours Derek Moore of Mount Forest as Senior of the Year

Wellington North Council recently honoured Mount Forest native Derek Moore as the 2026 Senior of the Year.

Moore was given his award at the Volunteer Celebration and New Resident Welcome event on Wednesday, April 15 at the Arthur and Area Community Centre.

A media release from the Township of Wellington North shares that Moore has been advocating for the well-being of veterans far beyond the borders of Wellington North for over 50 years as a longtime legion supporter.

Moore's work with Mount Forest Legion Branch 134 has ensured the legion remains a community hub. That includes supporting youth organizations, fundraisers and service programs.

Additionally, Moore's service extended to the provincial level as Ontario Command president, helping to modernize, strengthen volunteer engagement and support veteran programs. That included the Leave the Streets Behind program for homeless veterans.

"Volunteers do not do the great things they do for the recognition, but rather to make their community better. Derek Moore is a prime example of that, however his contributions to our municipality and beyond is more than worthy of being recognized," said Mayor Andy Lennox. "His compassion, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to service have left a lasting impact locally and across Ontario. On behalf of Council and the residents of Wellington North, I am honoured to recognize Derek as our Senior of the Year."
