United Way invites the public to attend ceremony remembering those lost to overdoses

United Way Bruce Grey is inviting the public to attend the 5th annual 'We Remember Them' event in Owen Sound.

The event, which was launched in 2021, honours and remembers the lives lost to the opioid crisis in Owen Sound and the surrounding area. It was originally launched by Gelja Sheardown in memory of her late husband Barrett Warwick, who died of an overdose.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 28 from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Owen Sound Farmers' Market.

Family members are encouraged to take a carnation and release it into the Sydenham River. People can also bring photos of loved ones who were lost to substance use and add them to the event's memory board.

The event this year will also include donation opportunities in support of the Supportive Outreach Service (SOS) Project, which provides vital aid to individuals affected by substance use. Also, Grey Bruce Public Health will be onsite distributing Naloxone kits and offering information about the current opioid crisis in the Grey-Bruce region.
