Assault charge laid in altercation after North Huron council meeting

Provincial police say a charge of assault has been laid against a man in connection with a confrontation that followed a meeting of North Huron council.

The altercation happened following the February 17 meeting of council. A video of the incident posted to Facebook shows a heated exchange outside council chambers between Deputy Reeve Kevin Falconer and members of the public, including Stephen Hill and another man. Hill recorded the video, which which can be seen here (warning: the video contains foul language), while walking alongside Falconer after the council meeting.

In a written statement, Hill claimed Falconer "became visibly aggressive and advanced toward me" after being questioned about comments made to another member of the public.

The other man then appears in the video, stepping between Hill and Falconer.

The video then shows Falconer going to the ground during the altercation. He later left the scene in an ambulance.

On Wednesday morning, police announced that a charge of assault causing bodily harm has been laid against George Mills, 69, of Central Huron.

Mills was arrested on March 4, held for a bail hearing, then released with a court date of April 13. While names have not been released, injuries suffered by a 69-year-old man during an arrest in Huron County on March 4 are currently the subject of an investigation by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit.

When asked for comment on the arrest of Mills, the township of North Huron provided the following statement:

"The Township continues to respect the role of the police and the investigation that has ensued following the altercation that occurred after the public meeting of February 17th. With charges now laid and pending court case scheduled, the Township has no further comment on the matter at this time."
