School bus safety blitz underway for West Region OPP

School bus safety is the focus of an OPP traffic blitz for the next couple weeks.

West Region OPP detachments are ramping up efforts to monitor drivers and their behaviour around school buses from March 2 to March 13.

Police officers throughout western Ontario will be patrolling school bus routes and school zones to ensure drivers are stopping appropriately for buses.

Failing to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing is a serious offence. First time offenders can face fines between $400 and $2,000 and six demerit points.

Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop and drivers in both directions must slow down and be ready to stop. When the bus has red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, it is fully stopped, and motorists in both directions must stop.
