Man accused of trying to take cop's gun during Southampton arrest

A 39-year-old man is facing serious charges after Saugeen Shores police officers were assaulted and one nearly disarmed during an arrest in Southampton.

Police were called about a disturbance at a home in the town last week. When officers arrived, they determined the issue to have been a domestic assault. While trying to arrest a man, he allegedly became violent with police.

"[He] grabbed hold of one of the officer's firearms attempting to disarm him," police said. "Officers were able to control the male and escort him to the police vehicle."

The man is also alleged to have kicked and spit at police.

A 39-year-old man is charged with assault, assaulting a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, failure to comply with probation, mischief, resisting a peace officer, and uttering threats to cause death. The man appeared for a bail hearing where he was remanded into custody, police said.
