School buses cancelled for second straight day in midwestern Ontario

The majority of school buses in midwestern Ontario remained parked for a second straight day as lake effect snow continues to blanket the region.

The snow squalls moved in Wednesday night, following an Alberta clipper, and are expected to drop an additional 20 to 40 centimetres Thursday into Thursday night. Although Environment Canada has stated that snowfall amounts will be highly variable across the area.

The national weather agency has Huron County, Perth County, northern Grey County, and southern Bruce County under a yellow-level snow squall warning.

The snow coupled with wind gusts up to 50 kilometres an hour will make roads difficult to navigate in spots.

"The roads are snow covered, they are slick, they are slippery, and in some areas they are icy," said OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. "You are going to encounter some difficult driving conditions today, so if you can stay off the roads until this clears it might be the best thing for you."

Drivers who do have to venture out are reminded to slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.

All school buses in Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce are cancelled for the day, while those in northern Wellington County are running.

The snow squalls are expected to weaken overnight.
