Darlene Johnston resigns of Chippewas of Nawash Chief

Council for the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation announced Tuesday that Chief Darlene Johnston has decided to resign.

In a released statement, Johnston said she needed to step down due to health concerns.

"I resigned from my position as your Chief, effective immediately, due to medical reasons," wrote Johnston. "In my absence, several Councillors have taken turns serving as Acting Chief. I thank them for demonstrating their commitment to our community by doing so. It has been my honour to have served you, even for such a short period of time."

Johnston was acclaimed to the role of Chief on June 27, ahead of the August council election.

Council asked that everyone honour Johnston’s privacy, noting that she has shown exceptional dedication, leadership, and commitment to the First Nation, particularly through its ongoing legal battle.

Head Councillor Jessica Keeshig-Martin will serve as Acting Chief until council determines a path forward.
