Owen Sound unveils new garbage bag tag design

Owen Sound residents will soon spot a revamped garbage bag tag as the City begins distributing an updated design to local vendors. The new tags, which replace the long-used strip-style version, are now square and stick directly onto household garbage bags.

City officials say the redesigned tags are easier for collection crews to see and come with an added feature: a unique QR code. When scanned with a smartphone, the code links residents to their waste collection schedule along with disposal tips and other waste-management information.

To remove the new sticker, residents can find a slit on the back and peel along the arrows marked “Peel Here.” The tags have also been engineered to withstand severe weather, with a minimum application temperature of –29°C and a service range from –54°C to 94°C.

The updated tags are being phased in as vendors use up their existing supply. Both the new square tags and the old strip-style tags will remain valid until the current stock is gone. Prices remain unchanged at $3 per tag.

The City is reminding residents that every garbage bag set at the curb must have a clearly visible bag tag, or it will not be collected.

Waste collection schedules, searchable by address, along with a list of tag vendors, can be found through the City’s online tools at OwenSound.ca/Waste.
