Walkerton awarded OTF grant to replace ball diamond lights

The Municipality of Brockton has received a provincial grant to fund the replacement of the lights at the Walkerton Ball Diamond.

Staff reported to council this week that it's application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Capital Stream was successful, and the Municipality will receive over $140,000 to fund the project.

The current diamond lights were installed over 26 years ago, and a 2023 inspection found that fixtures were rotting and replacement parts were unavailable.

A new lighting system featuring 750-watt LED lights was proposed, which staff say is expected to reduce annual operating costs by approximately $1,734.

However, the municipality was unsuccessful in its grant applications in 2023 and 2024. Staff pointed to the "valuable feedback from OTF program managers" as a reason this year's funding request was successful.

The light replacement is projected to cost $127,395.15 plus HST. Work will start this fall and be completed by summer 2026, as OTF grant funds must be expended by the end of next year.
