The Town of Goderich is extending its thanks after an outpouring of support for the victims of last weekend's apartment fire on Nelson Street.
In a statement Thursday, the town said its been amazed and humbled by the donations received so far and that it shows the strength of the community.
Friday will be the final day accepting gift cards on behalf of the impacted families, due to "the immediate needs of those affected and the importance of distributing donations as soon as possible."
Gift card donations can be dropped off at Town Hall until 4 p.m. on August 8.
Mayor Trevor Bazinet also took to social media to recognize those who played a role in helping residents of the building escape after the blaze broke out Friday night.
Sharon Horton of Goderich, Alice Pfeifer of Moncton, Nicole Zyta of Brussels, Jenna Pfeifer of Brussels, Kelsey Hock of London Jennifer McMillan of Wroxeter and Sarah Doelman of Winthrop, were all recognized by the Mayor for their quick actions, which helped result in no injuries being suffered while the 18-unit apartment burned.
"When an apartment fire broke out, these brave souls didn’t hesitate," wrote Bazinet. "They entered a burning building to rescue people trapped inside and even grabbed a ladder to help others to safety. Their actions were selfless, fearless, and nothing short of heroic. Because of their courage and quick thinking, lives were saved."
A private recognition ceremony for those individuals will be held in council chambers.
