The final plug on the Clinton Pool was pulled last week, as Central Huron council was left with no choice but to fill in the public swimming space.
Council reached the decision one year ago to fill in the pool and cover it with green space. However, the decision was put on hold, pending the possibility of a grant through the Ontario government's Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
On June 3, the town's facilities manager was informed by the Ministry of Sport that their grant application was unsuccessful.
Two weeks later, council decided that with no other funding available for the repairs — that were quoted at $5 million in 2023 — it was time to move ahead with filling in the pool.
