United Way looking for donations to annual backpack program

The United Way Bruce Grey is hoping the community can rally around the annual backpack program once again this year.

This year marks 20 years of the annual program that helps purchase new backpacks and school supplies for lower income families to help kids succeed in the classroom.

Kristy Andre, United Way Fundraising Champion, says the goal in 2005 was to help 250 kids. Last year, they served almost 2,700 (2,686). That represents a 975 per cent increase in need since 2005.

"It kind of shows how the economy is right now. Every year, the need goes up unfortunately. We know how much the program means to families and we want to be able to continue to support them," Andre said.

Andre says they need help from generous donors to do that. This year, the fundraising goal is $80,000.

The backpacks are the main staple of the program, but as Andre notes, they also make sure each kid is properly geared up for the classroom with all the essential supplies.

"So we do supplies based on the grade level because obviously JK to high school, there's different needs that go into the backpacks. There's a bunch of stuff in them, it just depends what grade you're in," she explained.

This year, on top of the regular Owen Sound one, United Way Bruce Grey will host Stuff-A-Bus events in partnership with CKNX in Hanover and Port Elgin.

"Friday, August 22, we are at Grant's Your Independent Grocer in Hanover. The next day on Saturday, August 23, we are at Vanderwerf's Your Independent Gorcer in Port Elgin. So if you are wanting to learn more about the backpack program or make a donation there, we very much appreciate that," Andre added.

Also, this year United Way Bruce Grey welcomes Lauryn Rettinger as the new Backpack Program Coordinator.

"I'm so excited to be part of something that directly impacts kids and families," said Rettinger. "Everyone deserves to feel confident and prepared for school, and that starts with the right supplies."
