Bruce Power giving $10K toward wildfire relief effort

To mark Clean Air Day, Bruce Power is kicking in cash to help the more than 30,000 people forced from their homes due to wildfires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The nuclear energy supplier announced on Wednesday it has donated $10,000 through the Canadian Red Cross toward the relief effort.

“Bruce Power is proud to make this donation to the Red Cross to help ensure the communities and people affected by the wildfires get the assistance they need,” said John Peevers, Bruce Power’s director of community, media relations and economic development.

Donations made to the Red Cross will be used to assist those affected by the wildfires with immediate and ongoing relief including financial assistance, support to evacuees and host communities, and community preparedness and risk reduction plans. All money given is currently being matched by provincial and federal governments.

The wildfires in the Prairies have led to hazy skies in midwestern Ontario as smoke drifts into the region. Environment Canada warned the haze can slightly obscure visibility and reduce clarity in the sky. At this point, no air quality warnings related to the smoke have been issued in midwestern Ontario.

Clean Air Day is marked every June 4 in Canada. It is billed as a day to recognize how important air quality is to health, the environment, and economy.
