Owen Sound and West Grey police merger talks continue

The City of Owen Sound and the Municipality of West Grey are preparing for the next step in talks about a potential joint police service.

In 2024, Owen Sound and West Grey councils agreed to look into the potential implementation of a joint municipal police service.

Owen Sound City Manager Tim Simmonds provided council with an update this week.

Over the past several months, Simmonds has been holding discussions with both police chiefs and senior leadership at West Grey.

"We have a draft report and the charter to come forward actually to seek council's authority to create a joint task force between the new two municipalities to bring some additional governance and oversight to it, rather than trying to coordinate one meeting, and one meeting, back and forth and duplicating efforts," he explained.

Simmonds said the draft report and charter will soon come before council for consideration.

"Late last week, West Grey asked for some additional time to review some materials and have some internal conversations," Simmonds added. "Our goal now would be to bring that to them June 16 meeting, but we're waiting on West Grey at this point."

The proposed task force will study the benefits, structur, and feasibility of a joint police force.
