South Bruce OPP to educate the public on common crypto scams

South Bruce residents can get a leg up on cryptocurrency scammers next week.

OPP will be hosting two information sessions next Wednesday in Walkerton and Kincardine to educate the public about common frauds and crypto scams. A member of the Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit will also bee on hand to discuss digital currency.

The first session will be held at the Walkerton Legion at 505 Scott St. in Walkerton at 10 a.m. The second session goes at the Davidson Centre at 601 Durham St. in Kincardine at 1 p.m.

The sessions are a response by OPP to the more than $350,000 southern Bruce County residents have already lost this year as a result of falling victim to such online scams.

"We continue to urge residents to be cautious when engaging in digital currency transactions and investments," OPP said in a statement. "Scammers often use fraudulent documents marked with logos and wording that can appear legitimate, which leads the victim down a path of surrendering personal information and banking details under the belief they are conversing with a legitimate source."

Police added that anyone who receives such documentation should contact the company or financial institution in person or directly by a number known to be theirs and not the phone number or email the document advises, as it could be fraudulent.

People interested in attending the information sessions are not required to register, however, police noted space may be limited.
