Saugeen Shores seeks input on affordable housing designs

Saugeen Shores residents can help shape the future of affordable housing in the community.

Thanks to federal funding through the Housing Accelerator Fund and Bruce Power SEED Funding, the town has launched a pre-approved housing design program.

Working with Invizij Architects and Tim Welch Consulting, the town has created preliminary designs for additional residential units and low-rise housing options like duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes.

Public input, zoning by-law reviews, and mapping exercises are all key parts of the plan to keep new builds compatible with the town’s character.

A survey is available until May 9 as the town seeks input on pre-approved housing designs.

The designs, which include floor plans and building details, will help streamline the approval process and make it easier for residents to add Additional Residential Units to their properties.

The additional residential units measure about 550 sq ft. The duplexes will feature more than 1,700 sq ft per floor.

In late 2024, Council approved Zoning changes that allow up to four units on residential lots as a first step toward encouraging more low-rise housing.

In recent years, 60 additional residential units have been approved and built in Saugeen Shores.

The initiative aims to speed up the development process while keeping the town’s small-town charm intact.
