CK patients getting new, faster, more convenient paramedic services

New patient care models, launched by the province, aim to help paramedics deliver faster, more convenient care to patients at home and in their communities.

The province said the new model will give paramedics greater flexibility to treat eligible patients who call 9-1-1 at home or on scene, and help patients access more appropriate, timely care.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault said the changes will strengthen local health-care services, reduce unnecessary hospital visits, and help patients get the care they need, faster.

"These new patient care models are great news for Chatham-Kent residents," said Pinsonneault. "By strengthening the partnership between Chatham-Kent Paramedic Services, Chatham-Kent Hospice, and the Community Paramedicine Program, we are helping ensure patients receive timely, compassionate care, and support in the setting that best meets their needs. This is an important step in making care more accessible and keeping patients closer to home and their loved ones."

Chatham-Kent Paramedic Services will now offer two new models of care, including:

  • Alternate Destination Model: Eligible palliative care patients who call 9-1-1 can receive treatment from paramedics on-scene before being transported to Chatham-Kent Hospice for specialized, wraparound care.

  • Treat and Refer Model: Eligible palliative care patients who call 9-1-1 can receive treatment from paramedics on-scene and be referred to the Chatham-Kent Community Paramedicine Program for ongoing care and support.

Minister of Health Sylvia Jones said the new models are intended to protect hospital and ambulance capacity for patients who need them most. They should also reduce unnecessary emergency department visits.

The Ontario Government noted it has increased funding for Land Ambulance Services in Chatham-Kent by 10 per cent, bringing the province’s total investment across the municipality to over $8.7 million in 2026.
