CK Public Health encourages those in crisis to reach out for help

The Medical Officer of Health in Chatham-Kent (CK) has revealed that suicide deaths are a significant public health issue in CK, with approximately 150 people dying by suicide in CK over the past decade.

Dr. Shanker Nesathurai emphasized that suicide is preventable and highlighted the importance of open conversations, timely support, and reducing barriers to care.

He also noted that many suicide attempts are impulsive, adding that lives can be saved by limiting access to means of self-harm, including firearms, unauthorized medications, and high-risk locations. Dr. Nesathurai said those steps can save lives by creating time and space for intervention and support.

He said CK Public Health remains committed to promoting mental wellness, reducing stigma, and supporting evidence-based approaches that protect lives.

Nesathurai is reminding the public that support is available for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, adding that it's important to reduce the stigma around suicide.

"One of the most important messages we can share with someone who is struggling is that they matter," he said. "They are loved, they are wanted, and the world would be a lesser place without them."

Nesathurai doesn't believe the Coroner's data includes suicide by overdose.

"It would appear that they're not counting, for the most part, substance use-related deaths. I think that these deaths likely are not substance use deaths," he added.

Across Ontario, approximately 1,500 people die by suicide each year, a number that significantly exceeds deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions, Nesathurai noted.

He added that CK, at 15 suicide deaths each year, is slightly above the provincial suicide rate.

"It's my understanding, and the data is complex, that it's about 11 suicide-related deaths for every 100,000 people and I think we're a little bit more than that number, recognizing that the small numbers don't give us the statistical precision overall," said Dr. Nesathurai.
