Wheatley man charged following the death of a dog

The death of a dog has resulted in charges against a Wheatley man.

Chatham-Kent police arrested a 43-year-old man just before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday after responding to information about possible animal abuse.

When arriving at a Cemetery Road address, officers found a severely injured dogthat showed signs of neglect and abuse. Despite immediate medical care, police said the dog later died because of its injuries.

Animal Welfare Services (AWS) was contacted and helped to investigate what happened to the dog and the state of several other farm animals on the property.

The suspect was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. According to police, AWS is pursuing additional charges.

The man has since been released from police custody with conditions and a future court date.
