CK looks to continue contract with Pet and Wildlife Rescue

The future of an animal rescue in Chatham will be in Chatham-Kent council's hands next week.

Administration is recommending a two year extension for Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) for animal control and pound services in Chatham-Kent.

The price tag for the new contract would be $2.7 million for the period between April 1, 2027 and March 31, 2029, a 3.6 per cent increase in cost, staff noted.

The shelter lease agreements in Chatham and Wallaceburg would also be extended.

"The Municipality’s animal control contract with PAWR will end on March 31, 2027. It is administration’s opinion that it is in the Municipality’s best interest to extend the contract with PAWR for an additional two years instead of issuing a new request for proposals, which could lead to higher costs and uncertainty in service delivery," staff wrote in a report going to council on Monday.

The municipality noted it has received limited interest for animal control services in the past, often resulting in bids only from the existing service provider at the time.

Administration also believes the proposed cost increase is reasonable, adding that PAWR, a proven local provider, provides reliable and effective animal control services and ensures responsiveness and accountability to the community.

PAWR operates 365 days a year with the support of 16 staff members and more than 50 volunteers.

It also offers a broad range of community services to improve animal welfare, including a pet food bank, assistance with wildlife issues, microchip clinics, and spay and neuter voucher programs.
