St. Clair soccer coach named OCAA Coach of the Year

A strong season by St. Clair College's women's soccer team has resulted in recognition for its veteran coach.

Steve Vagnini has been named the Coach of the Year for all sports by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). The announcement was made public on Monday.

"During his near-decade with the St. Clair program, Vagnini has cultivated a culture of accountability, respect, and teamwork," read the announcement by the OCAA. "By prioritizing comprehensive player development, covering technical, tactical, physical, and psychological growth, he has ensured his athletes evolve into well-rounded individuals and competitors."

Vagnini guided the Saints to St. Clair's first divisional title since 2000. Coming off a 2024 playoff disappointment, the team began the season with three wins and three draws before winning the final four matches in a row to finish 7-0-3. Only five goals were allowed the entire regular season.

In the playoffs, St. Clair defeated Loyalist and Durham to reach the OCAA Championship Final Four, which was hosted by the Saints. The home team won the OCAA gold medal with wins over Humber and Centennial.

The Saints reached the bronze medal match of the national women's soccer championship in Red Deer, Alberta.

Vagnini coached the women's soccer program from the 2013-14 through the 2016-17 season. He went to the University of Windsor to coach its men's team for 2017-18, then returned to St. Clair College.
