CK detailer to work on former Air Force One plane

A Chatham-Kent (CK) detailer is getting the opportunity to work on one of history's most recognizable planes.

Zachary Chauvin, the owner of Tilbury AutoShine, has been chosen to restore one of the first jets to be called Air Force One. It was used by U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon.

"To have the honour to go and work on something like that, it puts you at a loss for words," said Chauvin.

He was one of a few people in the world eligible to do the work since he's part of a group called the Detail Mafia. The only way to join the group is to be trained by Renny Doyle, a well-respected name in the detailing industry, in Big Bear Lake, California. Chauvin is one of four Canadians in the mafia, with the other three living in Western Canada.

Chauvin explained that the initial shock of being chosen has gone away, though he believes it'll return once the work starts.

"What I've heard from others in the group that have gone before is that it doesn't really hit you until you walk into the museum," he added.

The plane is currently on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. All the work is scheduled to happen in July.
