New CK snowplow names announced

Chatham-Kent (CK) residents once again stepped up with some creative names for the latest edition of the snowplow naming contest.

Mayor Darrin Canniff announced the three winners on CK Mornings with Chris and Allanah on Wednesday morning.

Billie Ice-ish received 29 per cent of the votes, Clearopathra came second with 18 per cent of the votes, and Plowabunga picked up 15 per cent of the votes.

A total of 184 votes were cast for the 10 names in the running this year.

Naming snowplows has become a popular annual tradition in Chatham-Kent, celebrating community creativity and winter spirit.

Several of the previous winning names have been featured nationwide during Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts.

The municipality has told CK News Today that the snowplow fleet will be almost fully named after these three new names.

Mayor Canniff said (CK) garbage trucks are next to be named, and he's looking forward to all the fun that comes with it.

"This spring, we've worked with Waste Connections, and they've agreed that we can name all the garbage trucks. There are about eight of them across Chatham-Kent. So, we'll be doing the same thing for that," he explained.

Canniff said there's already a creative vibe with the upcoming garbage truck naming contest.

"I'll give you one that has been tossed around, and the first name they gave me was Junk in the Trunk. That is really symbolic of a garbage truck. To have names like that," he added.

Canniff explained that no tax dollars were or will be spent on either naming contest because they're sponsored.

"Waste Connections is sponsoring it. They're covering all the costs. They are going to give out prizes, etcetera, to the people who pick the winning names. They're not our trucks, they're their trucks. The only cost to us is talking about it and having a little fun with it," he said.

No dates have been set to name the CK garbage trucks.
