Another fire at 99 McNaughton Avenue West in Chatham.
It's the same housing complex that was the site of an arson in August 2024 that displaced approximately 100 residents for several months.
First responders, including the Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS), Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), were called to the housing complex Thursday afternoon for reports of smoke in the halls.
Fire crews determined there was an apartment fire and were able to quickly knock down the blaze and keep it isolated to one unit on the second floor.
No injuries were reported, and residents were evacuated to buses to stay warm. The church across the street was opened to evacuees, and staff from Housing Services and Fire Admin attended to assist tenants.
Police blocked off a section of McNaughton Avenue West in front of the building during the evacuation.
All tenants were able to return to the units that night, except for those in the second floor D block.
The cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined, and the Ontario Fire Marshall will be attending Friday morning to investigate.
