Police find suspected fentanyl on shoplifting suspect

A 36-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after he was chased down by police in connection with a shoplifting investigation.

Chatham-Kent police said they got a call about the shoplifting incident at a retail store in Chatham at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officers said the suspect had reportedly hidden about $350 worth of merchandise and left the store without paying for it.

When he was confronted, the suspect allegedly dropped some items and then took off running.

Officers caught up with the man a few hours later, at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, and managed to arrest him after a brief foot chase.

When police searched the man, they allegedly found a rolled-up piece of tin foil that contained a white substance suspected to be fentanyl.

Officers also reported finding some more drug-related equipment and packaging materials on the man.

The accused was charged with theft, possession of property obtained by crime, resisting a peace officer, escaping lawful custody, and drug possession.

He was taken into custody and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Man wanted for fraud arrested after traffic stop

A 32-year-old man who tried to outrun and outwit police is facing a pair of charges.

Chatham-Kent police said they arrested the man after initiating a traffic stop in Chatham at around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers said the suspect pulled his vehicle into a driveway on Prince Street and then took off running.

Police chased him down and he eventually surrendered himself, but only after he tried to get into a nearby residence.

The 32-year-old Chatham man was arrested on an outstanding warrant for fraud and he was also charged with driving while under suspension.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date.
