Officials with the Black Excellence Awards in Chatham-Kent say this year's second annual ceremony and gala was a "resounding success".
The sold-out gathering is the cornerstone event of Chatham-Kent’s Black History Month celebrations and honoured the "remarkable achievements" of Black leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, youth, and one "special" Trailblazer, all who are making a lasting impact in the community, according to event co-chairs Doug Robbins, Michelle Robbins and Shannon Prince.
“The Black Excellence Awards & Gala is more than just an event -- it’s a movement that ensures the contributions of Black individuals in Chatham-Kent are recognized and celebrated and elevated,” said event co-chair Doug Robbins. “Each nominee represents the hard work, resilience, and brilliance of our community, and we are proud to honour them.”
This year’s awards recipients are:
Citizen of the Year - Yejide Kilanko
Black-Owned Business of the Year - Jeral Lumley – Social Ladybug
Female of the Year - Marsaydees Ferrell
Male of the Year - Kyle S. Wright
Youth of the Year (Ages 13-17) - Layla Bardyla
Youth of the Year (Ages 18-25) - Oluwanifemi Ezekiel Koleosho
Agriculturalist of the Year - Rebecca Smyth
Black Excellence in Education - Derek Quigley
Trailblazer - Olive Olbey
The Black Excellence Awards Committee extended its heartfelt congratulations to all nominees, recognizing their dedication to excellence and their contributions to making Chatham-Kent a stronger, more vibrant community.
“This event is about acknowledging those who are paving the way for future generations,” said event co-chair Michelle Robbins. “It’s inspiring to see such a diverse group of individuals excelling in different fields, each leaving a lasting mark on our community.”
Officials noted they are already looking forward to the 2026 Black Excellence Awards and Gala and are dedicated to expanding it to create more opportunities for recognition and fostering a legacy of Black excellence, achievement, and community impact.
