Brussels bore the brunt of last week's lake effect snowstorm

Brussels residents had more than their fair share of shoveling to do compared to people in other parts of midwestern Ontario following last week's lake effect snowstorm.

Environment Canada has released preliminary snowfall totals from the snow event that struck last Thursday into last Friday. Brussels received the highest amount under the snow squalls with as much as 48 centimetres recorded in that area.

Markdale was a distant second highest with 23 centimetres, followed by Lucknow with 22 centimetres, and Flesherton with 15 centimetres. People in Owen Sound had a much more manageable snowfall total of five centimetres.

The heavy snowfall led some areas to declare significant weather events. All of which have since been declared over.

Snow squalls returned to Bruce Peninsula on Monday night. A yellow level snow squall warning remained in place as of Tuesday morning with Environment Canada calling for an additional five to 10 centimetres. Drivers have been reminded to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

The squalls are expected to weaken early Tuesday afternoon.
